Option consommateurs – Research Reports

Option consommateurs(opens in new tab) is a Quebec-based non-profit organization that protects and promotes consumer rights through research, public education, legal advocacy, and policy development. Employing professionals specializing in law, finance, management, and communications, the organization publishes research reports, educational resources, and practical guides on topics such as consumer protection, personal finance, privacy, and access to justice. Because many of its initiatives have a national scope or receive federal funding, the organization requires professional French-to-English translation to make its publications accessible to English-speaking Canadians.

The Problem

Option consommateurs’ publications often cover complex legal, financial, and consumer protection topics that demand precise and consistent terminology. Translating for Option consommateurs therefore requires balancing legal accuracy with clear, plain-language communication for the general public. Translators must also adapt Quebec-specific references for English-speaking audiences across Canada while preserving the original meaning and intent. This combination of legal, technical, and cultural considerations makes specialized translation expertise essential.

The Solution

These challenges can be addressed by assigning an experienced and dedicated translator who becomes familiar with Option consommateurs’ terminology, style, and subject matter over time. Close collaboration with an internal reviewer at Option consommateurs also ensures that each report is finalized with the organization and meets its quality standards. This approach promotes consistency, accuracy, and efficiency while preserving the organization’s voice and objectives.

The Outcome

Accurate translation helps Option consommateurs expand the reach of its research, influence public policy, and better serve consumers across Canada. For example, our translation of a 2025 report on tipping practices in Canada,[1] which was widely covered by national media outlets, contributed to a more informed public debate on the topic. In the report, Option consommateurs sought to provide an overview of the impacts tied to new tipping practices that have emerged since the COVID-19 pandemic and identify the most equitable solutions for Canadians. The report also provided an analysis of the effectiveness of the legislative framework applicable to consumer law with a view to improving Canada’s policy agenda for Canadian tipping culture.

Similarly, our translation of a 2025 report on Canada’s labour shortage[2] and its effects on the protection of consumer rights and customer service quality identified business reactions, the decisions made with respect to consumers, new practices, as well as the measures put in place to respond to labour shortages.

Through translation, Option consommateurs expands the national impact of its recommendations and insights to contribute to discussions on consumer protection beyond Quebec.
